Hi
I have a unique problem with one of my linux boxes . The machine gets reset(not shutdown) automatically after some time , some times even during booting . I have tried redhat 7.1 and 7.2 with 2.4 kernels and and slack ware with 2.2.19 .
I disabled almost all features in the bios and the result is the same . Logged all kernel, boot and daemon events using syslog , but the logs doesnt show anything abnormal .Even tried barebone floppy based linux and floppy based bsd . The result is the same , the system gets reset after some time or freeze .
Its a p2 350 with apollo chipset . I am trying lkcd from sgi now as a last resort . Any ideas? (Windows works fine)
I have tried memory test utilities like memtest and memory doesnt show any damage and changed the sdram module slots .No difference
Thanks

Balu .

Hi,

There have been a few reports like this to the LKML. For example : .

My suspiscion would surround the power management, i.e APM or ACPI ( However, this is not so likely if you have similar problems with the 2.2.19 kernel (unless 2.2.19 defaults ACPI on) and even BSD.

If you haven't done so already, I'd certainly turn off APM in the bios. You might like to try compiling a custom kernel with both APM and ACPI set to no but I'm not too confident it would make a difference.

Although you are not getting a sig 11 as such, this may help as it details various hardware issues --> .

Regards

I had a very similar problem with a machine with faulty processor cooling... never got any problems with Windoze, but used to get constant resets and freezes with Linux...

I had to replace the heatsink and processor cooling fan, and it behaved normally... Have your CPU cooling looked at... AV

My cooling fan is not that good , it stops once in a while .
But as I am not playing any 3d games , the heatsink should be doing a good job . I will try to replace the cooling anyway .Thanks
