I like both Windows and Linux, in particular RedHat. I want to have an administration career in one, but i dont know which one to tackle the hardest. One day i would like to get my MCSE (already have MCP forW2K). I like RedHat because of the shear customization of diff packages and unlimited free utilities. also based on the fact that Linux admins are few and far in between as opposed to Windows admins. I want a fruitful career ($$$$ if you know what i mean)

What should I do ?

Hi pctechnician.

Just out of curiosity, why not do both? What is stopping you from becoming skilled and/or certified in both. I imagine that would provide a fruitful career, as you would be versatile.

Admittedly, this would require a fair bit of commitment on your part to get skilled up on both (although you say you already have an MCP), but could be a good start.

If you think Linux admins are rare but also in demand, then perhaps initiate whatever course of action you need to become certified here first, but don't rule out the other. Or, consider doing both in parallel?

Not to mention you still have one valid useful skill if another goes out of favour with the public - for example, the significant decline in Netware usage.

You would be shocked at the number of questions asked about w2k and linux in the dns/bind/dhcp issues forum. (Shoot, I may have to learn about linux myself just to broaden my horizons.) Think about both. You're already ahead of me.

Just heard on web ( that China, Japan and South Korea have officially decided that Blaster, Klez and Sobig have been enough. They are going to make a joint Open Source OS and, more importantly, use it.
With all the noise around Open Source since the past few years, I think that systems other than MS will become important for the curriculum in the next few years.
I certainly hope that we are going to an environment where MS will be used on personal (clueless and less clueless) home PCs, while corporations will use some flavor of Linux/Unix/Sun on their servers, and maybe part of their PC base.
If that dream does come true in the next ten years, having a good knowledge of both environments is a great advantage.
But right now the optimist in me can't help but want to go Linux all the way, and let Windows lay on the side. When the market really catches on, there's going to be a lot of work to do, and good money to make for those who can prove themselves.

The President of our Company has approached me on the very same subject. He wants to start a plan/strategy for looking into Linux for more of our servers. Right now we have 1 AIX Unix, 1 RH Linux and 8 Windows.
We were not affected by the Blaster Worm, thank God, but we don't want to have to worry about the next "blaster" that comes down the road....

Interest in Linux has peaked and is on the down slide (it will settle into it's own small market share particularly in servers).

Many, many persons will stay with M$ because of inertia. Others for FUD.

So you ask me, Windoze first. Remember it's easier.

Remember it's easier.

AnanthaP I too would like to see where you came up with the idea linux is on it's way out. I keep seeing more and more posts on it.

Linux does seem to have these occasional bursts of fame, particularly when when Microsoft changed their licensing methods.

Overall though I would say Linux is becoming more popular rather than less, although I have no facts to back this up. Just casual observations.

Can you show us proof of this theory, AnanthaP? Like everyone else, I haven't ever heard this before today. I have heard the exact opposite in fact.

Sorry for the double post, I didn't have the chance to complete my thought.

Why would anyone rely only on a server that through viruses, trojans, and worms your entire network can be brought to your knees? The network where I work was brought down for about 10-15 mins because of one of these worms. And guess what? On my server, I didn't even know a virus existed (I use an IBM iSeries or AS400).

I want to Walmart, Glen, but didn't see any of these. Also checked their site, and the cheapest I saw was 288.... If you manage to find out more, post back. For $69 I'd buy a couple....

Yeh, note the cd-rom...so you're going to save anything you do - how? upload it over the superfast 56k modem to some online storage space? No, I haven't forgotten the floppy disk, but in the age of mp3s and mpeg videos, 1.44MB probably isn't enough. Although it may just about cope with your emailbox. possibly.

I wonder how many newbs are going to purchase this without realising the limitations of a disk-less system.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]
