if there's anyone out there who can help me.. please message me soon as you can.. thanx in advance

i am quite good at networking in a windows environment, and i have successfully, on many occassions, setup windows networks with the internet and windows based proxy-server software, such as aVirt... however, i have a friend who has just had her domain registered and would like to host it at her place... i have heard alot about how linux, esp. redhat, is quite good for a DNS and mail [POP3, SMTP, IMAP4.0] server, and this is what i would like to setup for my friend... but the thing is that i don't have a lot of skill in constructing a linux server... the best i can do with linux is modify a couple of IP settings and that's it!!! am not even sure if i know how to copy or save a file... problem is that i haven't had any formal training on it, and yet i know that if i knew those commands, i'd have no problem, since i am very good at DOS from the day i was trained to use it a couple of years back.... windows is no problem either.... but i need to learn how to work linux as a serious server....

this is what my friend wants her server to do:

1. host her domain name.
2. create local mail boxes for her clientel at her domain name.
3. configure the server to work with POP3, SMTP and IMAP4.0
4. in case of power outtage, route all mail that bounces to her ISP to
be retrieved when her server is back up
5. have her clients get their mail from anywhere using IMAP 4.0 protocol

please let me know if there are any other services you think her server should run....

i had thought of having the linux server work as a proxy/internet server as well, since she will have more than one computer needing access to the internet.. do u think i should setup a different computer to handle the internet traffic and leave the linux to handle mail and DNS only..?

if it's okay with you, could you tell me how i can setup her linux server for all this... i have heard of "sendmail.cf" and things of the sort, i would really appreciate it if u gave me some help on this or may be direct me to a site that would help me build a mail and DNS server from scratch, with all the commands necessary, and if a graphic user interface can also be used... i have heard of X Windows and "linuxconf"... as u can see, am very green abt the in-depth capabilities of linux.. i badly need yo help....

i will be looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible...

thanx in advance...

MARK

Mark,

you trying to set up a machine, which actualy needs a Unix Admin to configure. The only tip I can give you is go and buy a SuSE6.4 and most of the packages will work from scratch when you install them. The rest is learing by doing. Good luck.

Andreas

Check out <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> They have a VERY nice program that will do much of what you want. It installs automatically and is administered from your web browser.

However, I agree with the previous post. You are really going to need a crash course in network admin to get the system running. I also like the SuSE 6.4 release. It has everything you need for all the services you mentioned.

You may want to consider qmail instead of sendmail for your POP3. sendmail is a Mail Transport Agent and would still require a POP3 server, qmail will do both functions.
Michael Regan
mregan@bccs-ca.com
<a href= Cat Computer Systems
Black Cat Computer Systems build Linux servers and work
stations for the small office. Our systems feature the AMD
line of processors. They are an excellent balance of price,
performance and reliability.
