I recently built a new PC with two SATA harddisks . I installed WinXP into the first one and LINUX into the other. In the past, when i used PATA Hdds, I can easily mount Windows partitions as hda1/hda2 in Linux so that i can swap data between Win and Linux . However, i can see the WinXP partition at all ( can't mount /dev/sda0 or sda1 )

any idea !

Found this, it may apply:

1. Kernel Upgrade: warning for SATA users:

If you are using SATA drives, be aware that your drive designation may change when you upgrade to kernel 2.6.8.1, as it did for this user:

After an upgrade to kernel26-scsi version 2.6.8.1-1 from version 2.6.7-1 my system panicked on boot because my /boot/grub/menu.lst file listed my root SATA drive as "hde" instead of "sda" which the 2.6.8 kernel configuration strangely now requires. If I had known that this would happen I would have modified my /boot/grub/menu.lst file as well as my /etc/fstab with the new designation.

Try seeing if you can even access the drive.

fdisk /dev/sda
p to print.
q to quit

not save anything just quit.

See if the partitions and disk are even seen?

If fdisk does not work then type dmesg and see if the boot messages show both drives.
