Hi everyone,

I have the only Linux box in my company, and i'm kind of trying to make a point with it (yeah!!). The thing is, I can't get it to resolve host names... We are using two WINS server, but i'm not sure where to specify them in Linux (Mandrake 9.0)(in the DNS fields ?? Won't work)

I get the IP from the NT DHCP server all right, but I can't ping using host names, not internally, not externally. I did setup the gateway by the way...

Any body can help me with this ?

Thanks

How are you connecting to the Mi¢ro$oft domain? ______________________________________________________________________

Actually, I do not connect to it. I do use a username/password existing on the domain, so if it needs to authenticate, it should be ok... Else then that, nothing is setup to login or share files with the NT domain YET...

Are you looking to resolve internal NetBIOS names or hostnames? It sounds like you want to resolve NetBIOS names since you brought up WINS.

If you want to resolve NetBIOS names on the Windows network, the nmbd daemon that comes with Samba is used for this purpose. If you setup a Samba server, enter these directives in the smb.conf file...

wins support = no
wins server = 192.168.1.2
name resolve order = wins lmhosts bcast

You can also add static NetBIOS names to your lmhosts file. The nmblookup command is used for querying NetBIOS names, similar to DNS's nslookup -->

If you just want to resolve hostnames, then forget all of that. Can you ping your DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf?

Yes, I am trying to resolve our computer names on the server. Ex: I can't ping any of them by their Hostname, but I can with their IP... I did the Samba config you suggested, but still no luck... Looks like it doesn't use my WINS server at all... Even NMBLOOKUP won't resolve names of IP i'm giving it....

Any ideas ?

Try editing the lmhosts file with the IP of your WINS server. Use "locate lmhosts" to find it.

Are you using DNS for internal name resolution at all? DNS works a lot better than WINS.

Here's what I found out :
If I add some server name/ip to the hosts file, then I can ping them using their names. But if I add them to the lmhosts file, I cannot ping them using their names... In NetConf, the name lookup order is hosts NIS dns , so I think it doesn't use the lmhosts file at all, even if the samba services are runnig (smbd and nmbd).

Then, I can ping my gateway, but I can't ping outside (internet: Network Unreachable)

Here is the network config :
NT domain using WINS server : 192.169.101.2 AND 192.169.101.3
Internet Gateway : 192.169.101.199
I did setup my ISP DNS servers ip in NetConf.
I'm using a static address (192.169.101.83)

Any help would be GREAT !!!

If the hosts file works, use it! There's no difference in hosts and lmhosts files in this situation, since your computer doesn't care if the host is a NetBIOS or DNS name.

Can you ping the IP of the external DNS servers? Are the DNS servers listed in the /etc/resolv.conf file?
