I am curious if what distros people use. I currently use IPCop, which is great, but I am curious to know if there is a better one. Others I have heard of is ClarckConnect and Smoothwall. I do NOT want to spend money, as I am on a tight budget. iSeriesCodePoet

I already killed the installation to start over, but I'll give what you did a shot, and if I encounter the same problems I'll post them here!

Thanks much! J.R.

Thanks for the replies.

I am hoping (wife permitting :) ) that I can tackle this one over the weekend.

I guess I'll go with the 128MB (No biggie, If I don't have it, PC100 is selling really cheap these days.)

Will post back points of interest when I have completed the install and have put through some testing.

Cheers

I did.

Everything is up and running. The only thing I didn't like was having to put my DNS as a forwarder (with static IP's) vs. IPCop doing it on the fly.

So far I've only opened up HTTP/HHTPS, FTP and SMTP/POP. I tried running a nessus scan on it yesterday but got a little bored after two hours. I looked at the live logs as I was doing it, and it DID show portscan detections, which is always good.

At any rate, I need to do a little more tinkering, and try to compress my nessus scan for the external network. But for now it's all up and running!

I haven't... I have been playing with a new puppy, not much time for tinkering. I will let you know when I have played. Hey JR, what sort of system where you running this on? I have a P233 with 64 MB Ram, think this will work? iSeriesCodePoet

I picked up a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 450 and jammed in about 256 MB of RAM. Probably overkill for what I need, but it was the smallest box I had!

But I'm willing to bet that your 233 will do OK, even though the system requirements say 128 MB of RAM. This probably has more to do with virus signatures, and other Astaro stuff for paid subscribers than just hardware.

It would be a good idea to register first, and get the license key mailed to you before you start tinkering with it. Just makes things a little easier. It's free, easy. J.R.
