HI,
I have a SUN server installed with Solaris 10 01/06.
I have a new application developed and working so far on HP server, where there is Linux RedHat 5.
Can I install this app. into SUN machine?
I read that SUN makes 100% compatibility with Linux apps: did someone try the same thing?
Thx,
Paolo

There are a lot of variables to consider. Is the Sun server a SPARC or Intel processor? How is the app constructed? That is, is it a compiled language, a Java app, something else?

If the app is compiled for an Intel processor, and you Sun server has a SPARC processor, then no, it probably won't.

I'm sure someone else can give much more detail on the topic.

Thanks.
To reply:
- my SUN server has got a SPARC proc.
- about the Linux app. actually I don't know a lot yet... I only suppose it's Java, but not 100% sure
- @elgrandeperro: your link is about to configure new Linux zone in Solaris OS?I don't need this, I'd like not to use zones, but only 1 global.
Thks.
Paolo

I believe that is how the Linux application Environment is implemented, you cannot just run a Linux app natively, it must be in a branded zone.

If it is a Java app, it may work fine. It depends on how it's set up. I don't know enough about your app to suggest much.

If it's a standalone app (.class or .jar), just copy everything over and give it a try. You may have to tweak directories and shell scripts, but it may run.

If it requires an application server (.ear), you can download and install something like Tomcat or JBoss for free. The details to do that go beyond the scope of this little post.

It doesn't hurt to just try it though.

Yeah!
Thanks to all. I think now the best is ...testing it....when I'll have my app. available.
I will update you in the future :)
