Okay... I'm very sorry that I have to bother you guys, but I really need your help. I not that savy with computers, but I get by. Until now.... I just purchased the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router w/ 4port. I tryed using the set up cd the product came with, but it says that the router can't connect to the internet. Funny though that my desktop right now is connected to the internet even though the router and the modem is connect together as well. I can't finish the setup wizard and I can't use my laptop to connect either. I called my ISP, and they told me that my IP address changes all the time and would have to charge me for a static IP address. I'm lost and don't know what to do. Please help.

Linksys WRT54G problem

Don't worry about the suggestion to pay more for a static IP. It won't solve anything. Whoever suggested that either doesn't know what they're talking about or didn't listen to your problem.
If you are on DSL, then likely you are using PPPoE (or PPPoA). You have to set it in the router (read the manual about how to do it without the CD). Basically, you go to 192.168.1.1 in internet explorer and type admin as the password. The first screen that appears lets you enter all the ISP information, including your username and password after select PPPoE. After saving these changes, the router connects to your ISP through your modem automatically. You can check the connection status on the "Status" tab.
The manual describes each setting in detail. Most ISP's will assist customers in making sure they have the right basic settings. They won't support everything listed in the router's setup, but many will at least walk you to the point of getting the router connected.

Last nite after posting this, I tried a different approach through the setup cd. I used the DHCP was it??? and finished the setup wizard. So then I tried connecting my laptop and it wouldn't work. My laptop was able to connect to a secured wireless net at my neighbors house, by just typing in the encryption code it askes for. So I did the same thing with my laptop at work after I finished setting up the desktop and it wouldn't work. Did I miss a step or do I have the wrong code? If so, where would I find it?

Do not setup any secureity info in the router untill you can connect with out it. I setup a lot of the Linsys b's and G's and I have never used the CD yet. I have fould the CD's tryes to setup secureity and the like that I would can do better my self. If you are PPPoE the linksys should be set as PPPoE with your username and password and the modem set for bridge mode. On the linksys G's I have trouble if I don't set the MTU to manel 1492 can't go to some site page can't be displayed error.

Yes, setting the MTU to 1492 will help (although many Linksys routers with recent firmware are already set to this by default for PPPoE).
Like allteltec said, you need to configure your router to connect over your DSL line first, before you worry about other things like wireless connectivity. Hardwire (connect over ethernet) your laptop to the router and follow the manual setup instructions.

Okay, I did what you guys are telling me. Went to 192.168.1.1 Somewhere along the line I must have change the password because it wasn't admin. Regardless to say I got in and turned off the security and now my laptop can connect. Then I did want you guys are telling me. I tryed changing the settings to PPPOE, but it wouldn't connect. Then I changed it back to DHCP-Automatic Config. and it works again. Should I leave it as is because it's working? What's the difference in DHCP and PPPOE? If leaving it in DHCP is okay, how do I set security so that my neighbors can't use my line? Thanks again guys....
You only set PPPoE if your router is handling the login. Some ISP's allow their DSL modems to store the login, so that you don't have to install any special software (for non-XP users).

Hi I'm hoping you guys will be able to answer my question as well. I recently got a sooper dooper Linksys WRT54GX and a Zyxel Prestige 660.
I have to run PPPoA and have set up successfully in Routing mode on the Zyxel. However I cannot get connected to the Internet port on the Linksys.
The WAN ip I am getting from the ISP is not static.
LAN IP on the modem is 172.168.1.5
LAN IP on the Linksys is 172.168.1.10
The modem does connect ok as I can ping through the modem diagnostics screen.
Should the LAN IP of the modem be a different subnet eg 172.168.2.5 and will the connection from Linksys to Zyxel work after.
What about running the Zyxel modem in Bridge mode - what is the difference?
Or is there any way of fiddling about with PPPoE on the Linksys to get it working.
