I have a Linksys WRT54G that I am trying to replace my old WAP11B for security and user issues. It is hooked up to a Westell 2400 WireSpeed 4 Port Router. My DSL is dynamic With my WAP11B I can access the internet fine but when I try to get the WRT54G setup, it cannot connect to the internet. When I go into status and check my internet IP I get a local IP not my WAN IP. Is there a simple fix to this or should I pick up a WAP54G or a new DSL modem, but I would rather keep the WRT54G because I have users that I need to set time limits on and limit web surfing. If there is a simple fix, or a cheap one, please help.

This is, in the wonderful wording of many Microsoft KB articles "by design".

In this case, the design is by Westell. Essentially, you need to cable directly to the Westell, not through any router.

Do your setup, reset the router with its power switch, and remake the connections to your router.

I do not know the Westell 2400 model, I have used the 2200 and the newer Versalink. But the general rule is that you cannot access the web setup page of the Westell without a direct connection. The only exceptions I know of are the Model 6100 and the new Versalink, where you could use VLAN assignments and the uPnP server feature.

There have been thousands of web discussions, but the advice above is from someone who has read them all. Do a direct PC -> Westell modem connection, and end if using Static IPs on the PC make certain you are in the same network segment subnet address.

Best wishes,

I need to try to keep the WRT54g in the netwiek because I have several wireless devices. I reset the settings and put in the setup disk. I can get through most of it until it tries to connect to the internet.
