This is cross-posted from BroadbandReports.com as no solution has been posted there.

I'm using a Linksys WAP11 Version 1, with the firmware upgraded to 1.4i.1. All I want to do is enable MAC filtering.

Symptom #1: I can't log into SNMP after a reset until I put in new passwords using the USB utility. The default passwords of "admin" as supplied by Linksys Support or "public" as in the documentation, or "private" as in other default SNMP communities do not work.

Symptom #2: MAC filtering fails either by selecting Flash, Write, or Close, Apply. The addresses cannot be written to flash.

Symptom #3: In the SNMP utility, restore defaults and reset on the status tab fail. These functions work fine in the USB utility.

It all points to SNMP communication errors. Support at Linksys has no clue. However, another person posted the exact problem on BroadbandReports.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Some additional information:

Client is Windows XP SP1 with wireless patch on a Realtek RTL8180

Single Linksys WAP11 version 1 access point firmware version 1.4i.1

Also on network is wired router Linksys BEFSX41 firmware 1.44.11t

Now with double the redundancy!

. Under SNMP you need to enter 'Public' as the Group Name, and nothing under password.

. If you have enabled MAC filtering, is your MAC associated to that AP?

. Is your MAC associated with the primary AP, the one connected to your router that your are bridged to? It is the one that authenticates your connection, not the nearest AP.

Thanks for your response. However:

SNMP, of course, has no passwords, just communities. The default reset of the WAP11 leaves them blank. Using the USB port I reset Public to read, and Private to read/write. That's the only way I could get into the SNMP utility. However, it still wouldn't write anything to flash.

As to MAC filtering, no, I didn't have it enabled. That was the whole point of this post. I was trying to enable MAC filtering, which can only by done by the SNMP utility, which wouldn't save data (such as MAC addresses) to the WAP11.

I only put one AP on the network. A very simple setup: one laptop with Realtek 8180 wireless NIC and one WAP11.

Here's how I resolved my error:

In the program directory for the 1.4i.1 install are the ROM images for the prior firmware revisions. I renamed the 1.3k version to 1.4i.1 and loaded it with the 1.4i.1 loader.

1.3k worked fine. I downloaded older versions of the SNMP utility from the Linksys ftp website. With version 1.6 I could talk to the WAP11 and even save data! I was on my way.

This rev of the firmware/snmp utility doesn't allow you to set up MAC addresses, so I decided to incrementally load firmware to see where I could get it to fail. The next version available was 1.4f. I loaded it to the WAP11, and then...

disaster struck. The WAP11 was dead. Only power light. No link. No act. No USB connection. No wireless broadcast. I don't know how I fried the USB/Ethernet chip in the thing, or how the firmware upgrade could do it, but it was toast.

Therefore, my problem is solved. I go buy a new WAP.

Anyone need the power supply? The antenna? The feet?

Sorry I can't continue the thread with anymore troubleshooting. I won't be buying a WAP11.
