Hello all,

I'm currently in the process of setting up a VPN solution for a client site. I'm new to VPN setups and people were telling me that is it fairly easy for a small office. Unfortunately I have not found this to be the case.

For some reason I cannot seem to access the Linksys unit from outside the office. I can ping it from outside and get a response. But I can not connect using the windows vpn client, and I can't access it's web management utility from outside.

I've Disabled the block WAN request setting, and I've enabled web management but it still doesn't seem to take.

My main concern is getting the VPN working. Has anyone used the Windows XP client with this router? And if not what client did you get to work?

Also for the VPN the clients most likely will not have a static IP address. I thought this could be worked around by making a group VPN tunnel policy, but I can't find information on setting that up anywhere.

I'm sorry that this information is all jumbled up, but I'm just thinking of the issues off of the top of my head. :-(

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you happen to get anywhere with this? I am running into the same problem and can't get it to connection client to gateway. I can get gateway to gateway to work. Calling Linksys was useless. In fact I had to convince the guy that they even had a product called an RV082. (He had to go look on their website). Since this is really the first unit to allow true client to gateway setup, I have not been able to find anyone to help.

Comments?

I too am having the same problem with the RV082. I did get a good tech at Linksys. After 2 hours working on it remotely he said he would try to get it working in their lab. I have not heard back from him. Berzins, you said that gateway to gateway worked. What gateway was on the other end? Thanks, for any help or comments.

I have a Symatec Velociraptor on the other end and it seems to work great.

I am too having problems with the client to gateway connection for the RV082. It is as though the RV082 doesn't even exist when I try to connect from a remote client (W2K Pro). Nothing happens. I can, however, run the web-based remote management software from a remote location.

Fortunately the gateway to gateway seems to be up running and stable with an RV082 on both sides.

Please keep us updated with your progress. If I run across anything I'll let you know too!

Good luck to all!

Success!

Fortunately Linksys wrote a better manual for one of their other VPN products, the WRV54G. I suggest you download that manual (it's PDF) and look at Appendix C - Cofiguring IPSec between a WIndows 2000 PC and the Router. It will walk you through setting this up.

If you follow the directions correctly, which are fairly good but maybe a little tricky, the connection will be established.

Note that the connection status in the VPN Summary will say "Waiting for Connection" even though the client will be able to connect to the network.

Here's the link for the manual... ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wrv54g_ug.pdf

I can't believe this worked, but it did. Please let me know if this works for you as well.

Best regards,

I had seen those instructions before, but they seemed to me the hard way yo do things. Since XP came out, it should be just a mater of creting a client side VPN tunnel through the network settings window. From reading those instructions I get the opinion that you are really creating a gateway to gateway (or faking it) tunnel. Did you try it? Is that IPSEC tunnel always used or can you tuen it on and off?

I did set it up like the instructions in the pdf file. The tech that I got at linksys also ran through it with me and we still could not get it to work. Sorry to bring bad news. I keep hoping to hear from linksys. We are thinking about putting a linksys BEFSX41 at the other end since it is fairly inexpensive.

Any comments on taking this approach?

After calling Linksys again I got another tech. I gave him the open call number and asked what was the status. He wanted to go over all the stuff the last tech had done. I am lucky I can still send the router back. I have my RMA and I am on the hunt for another VPN Router. Good luck to you all.

Last week I purchased Linksys RV082 for our small office with about 25 PCs with Verizon DSL to replace an older Linksys router. We needed faster performance and throughput to VPN into a corporate network of our customer. We do not need our employees to VPN into our small office at this point.

I upgraded the RV082 firmware to 1.07. We have static IP address from Verizon Online with a Westsell Wirespeed modem supplied by Verizon.

I tested RV082 at my home with dynamic IP address. I had no problems getting a connection to Internet with RV082.

However, with static IP address from our ISP, RV082 is not able to stay up for more than 30 seconds. We lose our connectivity to Internet even if we get it.

After reading the manual, I tried reducing MTU from default 1500 to 1492 and all the way down to 1300. Still no response.

My DSL connection does work with static IP with two older Linksys models. It is just that the two new models Linksys RV082 and the new Linksys Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router(WRV54G) are both having problems with static IP Address.

Any ideas? Any suggestions for alternate products from competing vendors in sub $1000 range with no software license limit.

Thanks

I just ordered a netgear FVL328 to replace the RV082 that I am sending back. I will let you know how it works out. I will say that I had no problems with using the RV082 for our internet router. We use RoadRunner and have a static IP address. It was only using the VPN which is what we bought it for.

Dear Sir:
I have play this router's VPN function very well.
And I have successfully established Client to Gateway tunnels via Microsoft XP/2k VPN Client, SafeNet VPN software, SSH VPN software very well. Please give your detail situation (don't have to tell me ur real Gateway IP)
And I can help u through

Thanks for your reply but I have already sent it back. Maybe you can help the other responders who are having trouble.

Hey guys, here's an update for you. I got it to work with this program I found on download.com called "The Green Bow VPN client." Apparently the rv082 has some issues with the SSH Sentinel client, and the windows client was way too confusing for me. And if it's confusing to me, no doubt the end users would go crazy trying to figure it out.

The only problem I'm having now is seeing the other network. I know it's working because it says on the router and in the green bow client that it is connected. In fact, I thought it was an issue with my subnet, but then when I tried to log into my local router with the standard ip of 192.168.1.1 I got the rv082 login! How confusing is that? I can log into the router as if I'm in the other lan, but I can't ping any other addresses on their network. Someone told me that it's a routing issue, and I tried the "route add (some ip here) mask (someip here) (someip here) thing" but it didn't work. :-/

I'll try to keep you all posted on what's going on.
