Greetings all.
A client of mine is running a Windows 98 OE, and is having trouble Recognizing the linksys adapter. He runs the hardware setup wizard, but the card is never seen in device manager under network adapters. I made him install the driver on a couple of "unknown" devices...to no success. I know this is a pretty limited thread, but I don't know much more than this. Basically, I can't load the driver because the system cannot see the adapter card. Hardware setup wizard cannot find it, and I have no place to load the actual driver onto. So i'm left with a customer (not the brightest star in the sky) who is not pleased. Why can't people just migrate to a better OS? Why 98 OE????! Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

hey ben - have you checked the bios setting for auto detect hardware - plug and play i think - make sure it's on?

If that's not the prob, then you could try moving the NIC to another PCI slot and see whether the issue lies there,

good luck

Thanks for the info, chronos. Although i have tried the different pci slots...i think you may be onto something with the auto detect. this is why i refuse to work on old computers...but of course, now i get paid for it, and am responsible for it...and the customer is dumber than a box of bricks...so i can't even try to guide him through a bios flash procedure. my advice to him shall be, and i quote...buy a new computer!!! lol. thank for the help, and you DID give me a resolution, and i shall remember it...i just don't want to take the time out of my day to implement it for him...because i'd take me hours. anyway...thanks for all the help. i'll remember your name.

Does he have a CD Rom drive? I have a USB adapter that I use when working on older computers that do not have NICs. I use it to connect to my wireless network to do updates, etc. Win 98 will not recognize it. I have to install it from the CD Rom. Does he have the CD Rom that came with the adapter?
