I just purchased a Linksys 4-port DSL Router.

As of yet, I do not have an external DSL modem, so all I want to hook up is the Router part of the unit.

I followed all the steps.
Now, from one machine I am able to ping the gateway (192.168.1.1); the DHCP assigned IP for the local computer (PCOneLan) (192.168.1.100) and the DHCP assigned IP for the other PC on the LAN (192.168.1.101) (PCTwoLAN). The name of the Lan if HOMELAN, and the name of this PC is PCOneLAN.

On the other PC on the LAN (19.168.1.101)(PCTwoLAN)I can also ping the gateway and the IP address for itself (192.168.1.101) (PCTwoLan). However; I cannot ping 192.168.1.100 (PCOneLan). It always fails to connect.

I currently use a D-Link 5-port hub, and the NICs, and the Cables work correctly at 100Mbps.

Just in case, I swapped cables from one PC to the other. And then I purchased another NIC, and replaced the NIC. First on one PC and then the other. The results were always the same.

I then proceeded to assign IP addresses myself (192.168.1.2) for PCOneLan, and 192.168.1.3 for PCTwoLan.
The results were identical. From PCTwoLan I could ping PCOneLan and the gateway, but from PCOneLan I could not ping 192.168.1.3.

Do I have a bad Router?. Since I do not have an external DSL modem, I cannot look at the configuration for the Router. Is there something within the configuration that would preclude me from connecting?

Has anyone run into this problem?

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks.

Jesse

Dumb question did you check the gateway on the 192.168.1.3 side? Jeter@LasVegas.com

Jeter:

After some trail and error, I determined I had Norton Internet Security (Not so swift!!!) turned on.

I disabled NIS and I was able to properly connect.

Thanks.

Jeez - been there! Took me four hours to realise the user had installed it while I stepped away from his computer!! Fortunately he was paying by the hour so it serves him right!!!

I'm having a similar problem.. with an installed external DSL modem. The router can only be reached if I connect it to a single PC. It will not be accesble thru the network.
How can I tell easily what network security precautions are holding me back?

Get rid off that Linksys router
their pppoe doesn't work a sh*t
