Links keep re-organising on Internet Explorer

I had Internet Explorer 6 and when I would arrange the links on the links toolbar how I wanted they would revert to alphabetical order when I closed the browser and loaded it up again.

Now I have IE7 and it does the same thing. It stays correct for a while then changes to alphabetical order for no reason.

What can I do about this?

Thanks

Have you tried sorting the files in this folder?

C:\Users\Username\Favorites\Links

customizing the Links bar

This tweak makes use of the (much under utilized/ under appreciated/despised) links folder within favorites.

I can point you here, but then it gets harder.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites\Links

This is the Value Data I have (in Vista) for the Order value

0000 08 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 ........
0008 0C 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 ........
0010 00 00 00 00 ....

Unfortunately I can't take that any further.

You could put all your links in another folder, sort that, and keep it on your desktop..

Yes I have tried all this but it keeps reverting back to alphabetical order.

What exactly is this bit?:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites\Links

This is the Value Data I have (in Vista) for the Order value

0000 08 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 ........
0008 0C 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 ........
0010 00 00 00 00 ....

Is this the value for arranging links by 'Modified'?

Thanks...

You may even want to just delete this registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

When you manually sort the Favorites again, the key is re-created. This key deals with the way the Favorites are stored when you manually sort them. When you delete the key Internet Explorer "takes control" and sorts them in alphabetic order. It wouldn't hurt to see if functionality is restored after you delete the key and then re-sort the Favorites yourself.

Here are some articles that shed some light on this key.

Also, does this only occur with your user account or do other accounts experience this as well?

That was the Reg Key that looks after the order of files in the Links folder. Following "IllogicallyLogical's" post, why don't you back up your current key, then delete it, see if that fixes your problem?

I tried deleting the key and still no luck. It still reverts to alphabetical after a while.

It's just this account to the best of my knowledge.

Any other ideas appreciated.

Thanks.

Try copying your files over to a new profile and see if the problem occurs with the new account. Follow the steps in the link and remember to NOT copy the various Ntuser files. After you have done this see if the problem still occurs. If it is solved and you have Outlook mail folders and such, you will need to import them into the new account before you delete the old one. This is also discussed in the link.

How do you want them to be sorted, you haven't mentioned that?

Has this ever worked correctly and consistently for you?

Are you only noticing this behavior in the Links folder, what about other folders, are they keeping their settings?

You can also try these SP1 fixes to see if it will hold your settings. Even with SP2 they might be worth a try?

"Sometimes windows XP forgets it's folder view settings.

Here is the solution.

Backup these RegKeys.

1:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]

2:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

After that you must delete them.

Restart windows to take effect.

Now you can change each folder and the setting will stay". (Perhaps!).
