Hello, I am developing a PDF document in acrobat 6.0 and I‘ve been trying to link to some files located in a subfolder without success.
I’m planning to distribute this PDF file in CD, so that my audience (who most likely will have the Acrobat reader 4 or 5 at the most) can read the PDF and open the links to several non-PDF files located in a subfolder.

I've been trying to use the action “Open a Web Link” and then type in the URL: “subfolder/file1.doc”, and it effectively opens my links in a new web browser, but it only works in the authoring environment.
As soon as I test the file with the Acrobat Reader, it opens a web browser with the “Cannot find server” message.

I also tried the option of attaching the files to the PDF, but since this option doesn’t work in the Acrobat Reader 5 or less, I decided not to continue that path.

My question is: Is there a way to link to local files using a relative reference to the PDF file, just like in HTML?

I will really appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance!

I Can't speak for Acrobat 6 but in 5 you just define a hyperlink using the link tool (looks like a chain) and while the "link properties" dialog is still open, open the second document, adjust the view (fit in window, zoom etc), and then click "Set link" on the dialog.
This takes you back to the first document where your hyperlink is now marked with a frame.

Hope this helps

Hello there Nandersen,

I appreciate your reply man! Unfortunately my problem still not solved because I'm trying to link non-PDF files from my PDF.
Let's say I have the PDF file in the root folder, and I want to link to it some Excel and Word files that are located in a subfolder.
... By the way, my client needs the files in the subfolder in their original format, so i cannot convert them to PDF.

I hope this extra explanation clarifies the problem a bit more.

Any help will be very welcome.

I just did a test with Acrobat 6.
made a link and pointed it to another directory folder and linked it to a word document which when I clicked on it in the PDF which opened the word file.
Just like Nandersen said (sort of)
