can styles in a word (2000) file be linked to another word file?

for example, create a style template file. then in chapter 1, all styles will be linked to style template, chapter 2, etc. this would be similar to a master document, but without having to create a master document, or having to go through the organizer. basically, edit one "master" style and the style in the other chapters will update.

my situation: created a "styles" template and about 30 chapters have been created based on that template. the chapters are still being edited for content and look. it's getting humbug to change styles in one chapter, then have to copy the style/manual edit for the remaining chapters. and yes, i would like to avoide the master document route...

Have you created a template file (.dot)? You just need to attach the .dot to all of your Word documents. If you make a change to a style in the .dot file then it will effect all of the Word documents attached to it.

Hope that made sense.

thanks. the attachment works. quite a useful tool in Word 2000.

as a FYI for other users, to attach a .dot, go to:

(menu) Tools | Templates and Add-Ins | Attach button
To use styles from the newly attached template, select the "Automatically update document styles" check box

for more info, search for "template" in Help.
