I need to find a basic walkthrough to set up remote administration for a second network via DSL connections. I’m aware PC Anywhere would probably work for what I need but I’m looking for a more “permanent” connection between my 2k server network and the second network.

Both networks have DSL/fixed public IP’s. My master network is running XP Pro machines with a Win 2k Adv Server. The second network is a Win98 workgroup.

The second network is “served” by a DHCP router. I have arbitrarily designated a Win98 machine as the “server” in the second network and given it a fixed private IP address - the other machines in the second network are DHCP addressed by the router.

I know how to configure the second network router to direct any port to the fixed private IP, Win98 machine.

My goal is to make the remote Win98 “server” a permanent addition to “My Network Places” on my Win 2k Server, and through it, to have access to the other Win98 machines. If I could actually do software upgrades on the remote machines via my 2k Server, this would be excellent. I believe this is all doable, I just don’t know how to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

Win98 is not a server OS, it may be able to operate as a client to the first lan, but if you put W2k Server you could create a proper VPN.

Try tightvnc. It's free software available on the internet. Works great.

One Win2K / 2K3 Server at the Workgroup site would be Ideal.
Windows 2K3 advanced 360 day eval is available, and is very stable. There are Secure VPN solutions built in and easy to set up that would generate a 24/7 secure solution for your requirements.
2k3 Server has an issue with some PII and P-Pro Chipsets but any machine running a PIII (256MB RAM) or above would do the trick.

Thank for the replys, they're appreciated. I'd love to install a real server at the second location but the users are technophobes, they panic at the mere thought of even upgrading to XP Pro. I downloaded TightVNC To test on my primary network, looks good so far. Thanks again SEJ111
