Linking to a spreadsheet, Numbers read as #Num!

I have a database where I am linking to excel spreadsheets. The columns that are numbers show up in Access as #Num! unless the number is a "Number stored as Text". Anyone know how to correct this in Access or how to convert the entire column in excel in one shot rather than having to go to each cell and convert it to text manually?
