Hello,
I would like to link an 2000 SQL server instance to a 2008 SQL server instance. On the 2008 SQL server I went to Server Objects/Linked Servers right clicked and selected New Linked Server.
Linked server: ServerName
Other data source
Provider: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Product name: SQL Server
Data source: SQL server name
Provider string: I do not know
Catalog: blank

The BOL are not real helpful here as what they indicate to pick for provider does not exist in the drop down. I go to the hyperlink for provider string and it looks like it should be blank.??

Thanks for any help,

In order for SQL2000 to reference an instance of SQL2008 it is necessary for certain files and drivers to be updated. This might be an issue if you have legacy applications on the SQL2000 server, but if you wish to try this you will need to download and install the following items:

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Objects
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client

Thanks checkai,
I just want the 2008 server to be able to write to a 2000 table. I was going to link the 2000 server on the 2008 side.

Ours are setup w/0 a Provider String...

Provider: SQL Native Client
Product Name: SQLNCLI
Data Source: [2000 SQL Server Name]
Catalog: [2000 SQL Server Database Name]

Thanks checkai have a star,
I just used your instructions (without the Catalog) to join on my local server.

The server that brought up the question does not have SQL Native Client as a choice. Do not know why???

Thank you again,
