I'm getting random line wrap problems within a text box. Words are returning to the next line before they need to and I don't know why. I've searched and didn't find anything and have gone through InDesign help w/ no luck.

here's a picture below of just one instance. it seems to be completely random w/ the words it chooses to send down to a new line...any help would be appreciated.

Did you type the words or import them from something like Word? I noticed bullets and imported Word stuff with bullets can cause some nasties - depending on what the original author did. It gets worse when you copy and paste between Word and ID.

If the above is true, try 1 or 2 things. Try placing the Word doc and check Show import options, then check "remove text and table formatting." and place. If you only want parts of the doc, you can start a new ID doc for placing and copy from that. You can also save the word doc as text and use that, then reformat in ID.

All the above is just a hunch based on seeing the bullets and having experienced that pain myself in the past.

i've tried everything and the result in the screenshot was taking the text into notepad (to remove any/all formatting) and pasting it in. i've also tried to re-type it. i've removed the bulleted list formatting (which is setup in ID) and the line wrap remains the same. i've tried other fonts w/ the same attributes (size/leading/kerning etc) and the line wraps remain the same.

there are couple instances in other files that are even worse...for instance, the word "to" is wrapped to a new line when there is clearly room for at least 20 or more characters on the line. other lines, text is pushed all the way to the edge of the text box. bewildering to say the least.

thanks for the ideas though.

One thing I always recommend when an Adobe app is behaving wierd is to trash prefs. On mac is user/library/preferences/com.adobe.InDesign.plist

Don't know the pc path.

If you're using a mac also clear trash the Adobe font caches. In Finder use Find to locate "abobefnt". Use "Contains" as the search parameter. you'll get results like "adobevnt.lst" and "adobe07fnt.lst". Trash anything with that ".lst" extension.

I can't reproduce the problem.

What happens when you set the bullets to be left aligned instead of Justified?
If nothing happens, Goto Type>Show Hidden characters, and also View>Show frame edges
then post another screen shot.

arghhh...such a simple mistake...thanks marcus!

showing frame edges revealed the text box had added points to it and there was an "indent" on the right side of the text box...a hand-made indent

i'm using a recycled template that someone prior to me had built and i assumed it was a square text box. i'll never do that again, LOL.

thanks all for the help!
