does anyone know of a product that can be placed on a telephone line so that the line voltage can be regulated? There is a place we are working on that appears to have a voltage spike and it is wreaking havoc with the PBX. An inline regulator may solve this problem. Please help if you know of anything!!!!

Is the excessive voltage being induced by the power company? You might want to check out SNC Mfg. They make a variety of transformers and devices for this purpose. Their website is:

If you are experiencing excessive loop current (as opposed to voltage), Mike Sandman ( has regulators that will reduce hot loops. He also has LOTS of good info on dealing with analog CO line issues.

I'm not sure exactly what the question is, but if you are just trying to protect against over voltage spikes like those induced from nearby lightning strikes, etc.

I use these on our premises wiring between buildings. They have different models with different clamping voltage available depending on the type of line you are protecting. They are considered secondary protection. Certainly won't protect against a direct hit, but seem to do the job for all the junk generated by "near" hits.

I would go with the sandman, it certinally sounds from the orginal post that there was excess line current happening

Just a follow up:

The line problem appears to be PBX specific. Strange noise on a Toshiba but nothing abnormal on a Nortel CICS.
