Line formatting help

I'm sure the answer to this is simple (like having caps lock on or s'thing), but it's really getting to be a pain.
Why does the last line of a paragraph sometimes have double spacing, that can't be removed?
like so...

Probably because the last paragraph mark is in another size font. Triple click to select the whole paragraph, and look at the font size and leading numbers. If one or both are blank, it's because there is a mix of font size/leading. Reassign the font size and leading to the whole paragraph by typing in the required numbers. Or reapply the style that the para is supposed to be.
 
A simple way around it is to position the cursor immediately after the last letter of the lowest line, press return and then delete anything below it.
