Ok, this forum is a little above my tech level, so I'll probably leave out tons of important information, but here's what I've got.

A few days ago it was brought to my attention that incoming calls on line 3 (either directly to that #, or landing on it when others are occupied) get dropped immediately. This is not intermittent, but happens every time. It rings about 1/2 a ring at the reception desk, but even if she grabs it right away, its already disconnected. I've called the number for line 3, and it seems to ring once, click like the call's connected, and then another click almost immediately for disconnect.

Outgoing calls work just fine on this line, but no incoming calls are coming through.

We have a MICS (ver. 7 or 7.1 or something like that :) and Norstar Meriddian phones. This system was installed about a year and a half ago, along with a Call Pilot voicemail system. No system changes have been made since then.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

David

That sounds like a case of a call "ringing down" where the ring signal is tripped by a ground on one side of the line. Disconnect that line at the phone company's demarcation point, assuming it is an analog line. If it still disconnects when you call it, its the phone company's problem. If it rings ok with you system disconnected then trace the wiring to see if anything else such as a modem or alarm system may have gotten connected to it. You could also have a defetive lightning arrestor (tvp).

The oldestgeek is correct....

Find trunk 3 and disconnect it from the phone system, call the number to see if calls are getting disconnected. If they are then it's a Telco issue. Call Bell/ Telus/ AT&T/etc and get them to fix their issue.

If calls are ringing (no issue found with trunk off system), then swap trunks 2 and 3 and test. Call line 3 to see if you can answer it, and then call line 2 to see if you can answer it.

Might be a bad port on the telephone system.
A reboot sometimes fixes these issues at times too.

you either have an alarm system on the line or have answer mode set to auto

@ Marskell
- if the line is being answered by the alarm systems modem, you will hear the handshaking (squaks) on the line, sounds like a fax tone.

- Answer Mode (Auto Attendant) can answer any incoming calls, then the caller should hear the greeting, but this is a possibility too if there is nothing set up in the AA... but if no changes have been made the trunks should have been answered all the time.

The Oldestgeek has the right solution - test the lines first then the system.

Unfortunately, if this is beyond your means in testing - please call in a specialist.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the Demarcation point, and its all greek to me. The incoming lines are only numbered with the telco's trunk #s (I think that's the term), and I have no idea which is the problem line.

I'll have to get our phone tech in to look at it.
