Limited access and contribute

Hi I have a site that when I click on site permissions the list shows that a group of users have limited access as well as contribute rights to the site and to two folders in a document library. When I go to the folders and look at the permissions the user group only has contribute rights.

So why is the folders and the root of the site saying the user group has limited access and contribute when I am in site permissions?

The concept of limited access comes into MOSS when you give a person directly rights to an item rather than adding the person to a security group and providing access via Security Groups. Is this what you are doing???
