We have a filesystem on which we are planning to create approx. between 5-6000 directories + some files and sub dirs.

Does anyone have some recommendations on how many files and dirs you could have on a filesystem before it could become a problem.

How much impact does a large number of files and dirs have regarding performance.

I actually had a reason to do something similar, only on a different scale, a couple of years ago.

I wouldn't expect 5k-6k files to be a problem. It started to be a little unpleasant when I was into the millions.

This depends on the inode limits for jfs which depends on the size of the filesystem (max of 2GB) and the nbpi parameter of the filesystem.

But this shouldn't matter for jfs2 (dynamic inode allocation).

Have a look at this for more info:

Hi khalidaaa

sorry to barge in on this post i just wanted to ask khalidaaa, the link to the book you posted, i was looking at it , is it worth buying? or can you recommend another as the redbooks are too expensive. Also Aix 6 is out so do you think Micheal .K Randal will write a new book?

SB

Hi SB,

I haven't read the whole book so i can' tell you whether it is worth buying or not but going through the contents it seems that it has some nice coverage for AIX intro.

But you can always get alot from redbooks for FREE!

Khalid

I know but just needed a hard copy just easier to read rather than looking at a pdf on the screen for 10 hrs... :)

I don't advice you to read the whole thing online! try downloading redbooks :)

what exactly are you looking for?

Khalid
