I have recently noticed in MSWord 2003 SP2 that I occassionally see text enclosed by light grey square brackets. These brackets are not part of the text -- they are symbols that apparently signify *something* in Word but I have no idea what it is.
This is not really a problem -- it is just driving me nuts to see these symbols and not know what the heck they are.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Dino

Sounds like bookmarks.

YOu can turn off the display or bookmarks if you like:
Tools > Options, View tab
Uncheck Bookmarks

So indeed they are! Thanks, that was driving me nuts!

A more interesting question is, what are these bookmarks for, or "doing"?

I'm having the same problem, except with MSword XP. I went to:
Tools > Options, View
but there was no 'tab' option. please assist?

It isn't a 'tab' option. Go tools ->options. On the tab that is called 'view' untick Bookmarks. You'll find it in the top section (show). In XP it's the 3rd checkbox down in the left hand column.

Cheers.
