Assuming a Merlin Magix is installed in a fairly clean location, protected by UPS and IBOBS out the wazoo, how long will this system remain functional?
Best guess from the pro's please.

Thanks in advance,

Mike in NH

MLX With "DEAD" Keys, could be due to a bad "FLEX BOARD" as mentioned above. That can easily be corrected.

There also was a problem with the Switch Hook LED on a LARGE RUN of sets, I think it was '97, that manifested itself with a symptom of "Can't hang up". Those were VIGOROUSLY RECALLED by Lucent once we discovered that problem. This affected the "D" sets and the "DP" sets, but the "D" sets seemed to be more prevalent, for what ever reason. Thus they have the bad "rep".

However, I still run into some that no one turned back in.

They are easily identified with the sticker on the bottom:

77xx-D04D, with the 2nd "D" being the bad run.

Any thing newer (A, B, or C) or anything newer (E, F, G ....) were without that problem.

That being said, do we remember what CISCO stands for?

My Bad, I meant to say:

Any thing older (A, B, or C) or anything newer (E, F, G ....) were without that problem.

and that's after I previewed it too.....

Andre,

Your correct, the 46xx sets are a little pricey but I'm starting to find them in the refurbished world, just like the MLX sets.
One great thing about the Magix with the 46xx sets , you can send them IP (even over fiber) to other facilities. They work great! Because the LAN I'm on is an "INTRANET", I can take a 4612D set with me to any facility in 5 states and just plug it into any LAN jack. It's kind of freaky to hear an "all page" come out of the speaker from the Magix your programed to and your not even in the same state.

Got it Mike, yes 4412D/4424D are My Favs!
Jan 2006 was very sad Day for Me, thats when I got the news of EOS of Melin Magix Notice!
IP Office is nice, but I think they killed the Merlin line too early!

Many technicians feel that the Merlin Magix was retired too soon.

About a year ago, on another tech help site, the question of why Avaya simply didn't retrofit the Magix to handle VoIP service was asked.

The answer given was that the processor, as it existed, would not have been able to handle IP. A complete redesign of the processor would have been needed to add that capability.

Given that the IP Office platform already existed and was to be marketed to the same target audience as the Magix, any further work on the Merlin platform seemed unnecessary.

Luckily, there is quite a bit of high quality refurbished Magix hardware out there (and even a small amount of new stock). The system, even though no longer in production, will be around for years & years to come.

Sadly, now that many Authorized Avaya Business Partners no longer actively sell the Magix, will the demand for the hardware be there? [ponder] [cry]

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

Dexman,

This year I removed a 30/70 Merlin that I installed as an AT&T employee in the early 80s, 84 I think.
The agency I work for now is hoping that the Merlin Magix systems will last that many years.
This is what prompted my original post.

With regard to VoIP, I have only had 1 client who really needed it, and we put the Multicom Gateway on it (with much anxiety on my part...:)) and 3 years later it is working great. This system went from an older Legend, to R6, to Magix - still using original MLX phones, except for the 2 TDL's on the gateway. He is in Phx with a call center, and an employee moved to Atlanta but still wanted to work for him - she is part of the call center and it works flawlessly. It wasn't cheap, but way less $$ than a new system.
