Assuming a Merlin Magix is installed in a fairly clean location, protected by UPS and IBOBS out the wazoo, how long will this system remain functional?
Best guess from the pro's please.
There is a lot of high quality refurbished Magix equipment out there. Even if a module or processor croaks, replacements will be available to keep them chugging along for a long time to come. Voicemail hard drive failures are probably the most common problem found in the Magix lineup.
Many of the Legend systems out there have been running since the early 90's with few problems. As noted by others - voicemail hard drives can be a problem - lasting from 10+ years to a few weeks - hard to predict. I still have customers with Merlin 1030's, 406's, etc - that have been running problem-free since the early 80's.
So - all-in-all - the Merlin Legend/Magix is a pretty rock-solid system - and components/parts will be readily available for a long time to come. I will say that replacement hard drives for the 007 MLM are getting a little hard to find. The Merlin Messaging can utilize larger, newer hard drives - so that voicemail should be OK for a good while.
Having worked with IP Office now - for a while - I would stick with the Magix - or the old reliable Legend.
IPO just keeps having way TOOOOOOOOOO many bugs - with each new release - they often fail to fix the OLD ones and manage to throw in a few NEW ones - very frustrating for the customers - so I can quite understand why your customer won't touch IPO - at least for now.
I would certainly NEVER se it on a mission critical application - like merlinman's FAA suggestion.
If it's a REALLY simple IPO setup - maybe it will be OK - for a while.
Another application that I would NOT WANT TO SEE AN IP (Maybe it works or maybe it don't) in, would be the 911 Center that had an old Merlin 1030 I helped replace with a MAGIX.
It was configured with some LOOP START LINES, several of them, and only a few phones, all of which were 24 Button sets.
You know, this IP Stuff is like when the Suits at the Pentagon (during 'Nam) decided our Jet Fighters did not need machine guns, only missiles, our Pilots would find that they couldn't shoot at the plane 50 yards from them, ('cause they had no guns) and the missiles couldn't lock on either 'cause they were too close. (Thank you HISTORY CHANNEL)
In other words, sometimes, I think the IP thing is overkill, and way out of range.
Merlin Series are work horses! Many older Merlin systems & Phones from the 80's & 90's are still in use!
The only issues I've seen with Merlin Magix have been the ETR016 cards, and occasionally a hard drive failure in voicemail.
Magix 44xxPhones are very reliable, and usually prefered, even with IP office! IP46xx/56xx Phone are very expensive!
4412D & 4424D Phones are mostly in My Home Office.
Only Issue with Legend is the MLX10D Phones, I have seen quite a few of these go bad with dead keys, leaving You only able to answer calls. The MLX10DP were much more reliable.
You refer to the the tel sets and vm cards....there are
membrane replacement parts and 3rd party VM systems out there to deal with the only weakness the Legend/Magix systems have....still the best out there and parts are
getting cheaper every day
