Just a guess, but if you are installing it from an ova file, then it's creating a new vm instance, which would have a different hardware identifier. A vm footprint is based on the server/nics, but then has a virtualization 'overlay' to it. If it didn't, how would you think you could install two vMCD instances on the same machine?

interestingly enough I had the same issue last night upgrading a system and thought this will be a problem when I reach my 3 attempt.
Anyway on the AMC now for this account I can see a new option called "Sync and Download license" now im not sure but it looks like this could be there to resolve the issue, I am running on version 5 so not sure if its just for that but maybe someone else has some more info on this button before I have to get the manual out.

This is not a new option on the AMC.
Be carefull with using the manual download license.
If you need to move licenses to another system at any time in the future from this app record you will not be able to as they will be locked to it until a base level upgrade is performed.
e.g. if you are on 4.1 you will need to upgrade to 4.2 or 5.0 online.
upgrading in stream will not unlock the licenses.
Also the vMCD licenses differenty than the standard MCD
Licenses are performed through the MSL (service link) so the vMCD syncs to the MSL and not the AMC.
However as the original post asks about clearing the hardware ID this will not help as the offline download will include the last hardware ID

Supernova,

So... What would be the way to reinstall vMCD?

Imagine this:

We had a Server with VMWare ESXi 4.1 U1 and we wanted to upgrade to ESXi 5.0. We did a full install of VMWare instead of an upgrade.

On that same server we had our vMCD 4.1 and of course wanted to go to 5.0.

The question is: Do I have to call Mitel every time I want to do a clean install of the vMCD, and ask them to clear the Hardware ID for me?

Will they be able to clear Hardware ID for us every time we ask them to as long as the Software Assurance in active?

Regards,

Daniel

I have upgraded vMCD without a full install and it has worked every time despite what the installation notes say about performing a full install.
In the sever blades make sure you upgrade the base MSL first, when this has been updated you should then see a new MCD blade to upgrade to.
Upgrade the MCD and all will be good.
The upgrade also restored the database however I would still perform a backup befoe you upgrade just n case you have any issues.

I have done this several times on both vMCD and ISS and have never had an issue andI have not had to clear the hardware ID.

My MoL account access allows me to clear the hardware ID with no limits as to how many times it is done.

So calling Mitel to do it will not be an issue as long as you have SA is active.

Some MoL accounts allow you to clear the hardware ID only a couple of times and then will not allow you to do it again for a period of time.
I am not sure how long it is between hardware clears as my account does not have this restriction.

Supernova, have another look at the AMC this is a new option, the old option (hyperlink) to download licenses is still there but there is a new button. Ive only seen it on my version 5 account so far but i havnt looked at any others recently.

@boycey
Indeed there is I had not noticed this before.
I need to find out why this new option is there and what it does.

Just a thought that if you don't follow the proper procedure when doing an upgrade you might get "static" :) from Mitel product support and be told you didn't do it the right way.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.

I have just had a play with sync and donload license
It makes a zip file with all your license keys that you can use in the software installer to perform an offline sync
Just like if you do a MSL offline sync

I believe you use it to store on an FTP server for scheduled upgrades of offline systems. You can now store software on the FTP server for scheduled checking of new versions and upgrading. If there is no connection to the AMC it will look for this .zip file in an AMC folder.

I haven't tested this yet so not 100% sure of its workings.

Me either so it should be good to have a play with this
