previous msg was close but my iunderstanding is you need:
1 NT Server Licence for the server running Exchange
1 Exchange Server licence for the Exch software.
1 exchange CAL for each user.
Outlook upto Outlook 2000 is free as the main client software (note:this is not a full office only outlook).
a windows NT Cal is only needed if File/print is required using the NT server. i.e. if you were in a Novell environment and the only thing you connected to windows Nt was for Exchange then you do not need an NT CAL.
However, with NT2K this all changed and then you need a CAL whatever the case.
SteveJepson is correct with the statement of no NT4 CAL if you have no OTHER file sharing apart from Exchange. I need a CAL because the AV Updates run on the mail server at the moment.
I have windows 2000 server license, Exchange 5.5 license, outlook client licenses. Looks like i just need to purchase a couple of the CALs. I have W2k licensing as per seat so users are covered there too...i believe.
Thanks for the info.
Also, has anyone had a problem installing Exchange 5.5 on W2k master or DC when part of an existing domain?
I try installing and it gives me an error stating the PC must be part of a domain but it already is.
I had the same problem and so have others judging by the posts about this. I was trying to keep a NT domain up until all upgrades to 2k server were complete But the only way I could use exchange on 2k was to install AD in a new domain and set up 2 way trusting before it worked properly. Great Fun?
