Hi,

I have recently checked our company eopen subscription and found that we have 17 exchange 2000 CALS. The number of users in the company that connect to exchange is actually 51.

(Exchange CAL 2000 All Languages OLP NL Corporate Not Applicable 2000 = 17 )

1) Do i need to purchase a total number CALS per user or email account that connects to the exchange 2000 server ?

Pls can anyone advise

Many thanks

You need one CAL for every user who will connect to the server from a client. So it's based on users, not the amount of mailboxes.

It actually gets more complicated than that. Microsoft sells two kinds of CALs for Exchange; Device Cals or User CALs. You either need a device cal for each machine or a user cal for each user.

Whats worse:

You need 51 Windows 2000 Server CALs just to allow the users to legally connect to the server Exchange runs upon.

Then on top of that you need 51 Exchange 2000 CALs to allow the users to connect to the Exchange mailboxes.

nifty aint it?
You'll find having a server up and running is pretty cheap. Deploying and Using that server is not cheap at all.
