hello all

For testing purposes, is it possible to remove clients from the policy settings without loosing the backups that had been taken. I found a website that said the backups are only removed after their retention period, regardless of whether the client exists or not. I want to be sure

Also I am wondering if anyone has done this before. Since our license limits us to 5 servers. We are thinking of using backup service provided by windows to take weekly backups and dump them on one of the client servers. they will then be included in the weekly full backups but not in daily cumulative incrementals. We are not mapping drives since our network is limited by bandwidth.
Has anyone done this before. If there is an easy or a better way of providing backup facilities to the user by making a script that runs every week, or any such mechanism , please do tell.

thanks

Why not just purchase clients, they are not that expensive, especially if you have already payed the dough for NetBackup?

The backups follow retention, it does not matter if you delete the policy or not.

hey comtec

Perhaps I was incorrect(or not very clear) or maybe I am misunderstanding your reponse.

Our veritas netbackup 4.5 license allows us to take backups from 5 clients only. We have 5 servers (A,B,C,D,E) our current cofiguration is

Media/master server : A
Clients : A, B, C, D and E
A,B - solaris
C,D,E - windows NT and 2000

apart from these we have 21 clients (users running WinXP). WE want to start providing these clients backup facilities, so the user will be able to save (personal) important stuff periodically.

I am not clear (what you meant when you said "clients are not expensive". Are you suggesting that we buy the unlimited clients license? (since veritas offers license for upto 5 clients and then for unlimited but nothing in between)

If you work with a reseller they can sell you a single license if needed. Client licenses can be purchased individually or as a pack.

The individual client licenses are priced on a tiered basis.

It's go off how many processors your client's have as to what tier each individual client would be priced at.

After you install the license key, you can add as many client's as you want without purchasing licenses. You would have to "true-up" your enviroment at some point though and buy the licenses you need.

Comtec was talking about a client license. They are only a few hundred dollars. Check with your reseller.

BTW, a Master, Media, or SAN Media Server license also counts as a client for that single server. So you have a Master server which will also count as a client for itself (server A).

BTW, you can probably get a limited demo license from your reseller for the extra clients while you're waiting for the order to come in.0
