Hi,

I'm currently running an AMD Athlon 2500+ and having trouble with my LG DVD rom. It seems sometimes when I put and cd/dvd in the dvd-rom autodetects it. However, at other times any cd inserted causes an error, one that says there is no cd/dvd in the drive.

I want to know whether this is a motherboard issue or the dvd-rom itself? And whether the dvd-rom should be replaced.

I also have an external usb writer, but I dont think it is causing any problems.

The jumper setting is set to master on the DVD-rom and I'm using the first/last place on the ide cable.

Either the problem media or the DVD-ROM drive's lens may be dirty. Clean both and try again.

If that does not work, then is the problem media burned or commercial?

The problem is not burning as it is just a simple dvd-rom... the problem is that sometimes any cd/dvd will not be recognized while other times it is.

I wanted to know if in fact it is the dvd-rom that needs cleaning or my mobotherboard not recognizing the dvd-rom.

What was meant was "is the "bad" disk a commercial disk or a copied/burned disk?

In terms of media the disks are regular dvd movies i.e rentals and I have tested burnt cds...

Right now I have removed it and placed it on an older computer and it seems to be working fine. I wanted to know whether this might lead me to believe my mobotherboard might be faulty?

I have already tried changing IDE cables and still produced the same result.

If it consistently works ok in the older computer, then on the new computer go to Start/Run, type regedit, click OK, click the + next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/
Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies, click on Explorer, and look for a binary value named NoDriveTypeAutoRun in the right half of the window under Name with a value of 95 00 00 00 under Data for Win 95/98/ME(0x00000095 for Win NT/2000/XP).
If NoDriveTypeAutoRun is not there, then right click on Explorer, point to New, click on Binary Value, rename it to NoDriveTypeAutoRun, right click on it, click Modify, enter
95 00 00 00 in the Value Data box for Win 95/98/ME(0x00000095 for Win NT/2000/XP), and click OK.
If NoDriveTypeAutoRun is already there but has no value or a value other than 95 00 00 00(or 0x00000095), then just modify its value to the correct one.
Then, close Registry Editor, and restart the computer.

If that does not work, then disable DMA for the drive if it's enabled in Device Manager in the new computer(or enable DMA if it's disabled).

If no luck, then connect a different power lead to the drive.

If still no luck, then connect the drive as Slave to the IDE 2 channel.

If still no good, then connect it as Slave on IDE 1.

Buy a CD-ROM Lens cleaner (works fine on DVD-ROMs too) from PC World or something for a few quid/bucks...

I have one and it works great. Only had to use it once, but I know I can use it whenever my CD-ROM is having troubles...

please answer my question i would like to know what type of dvd to get for my hp pavilion model xl 772
