Hi, I hope someone out there can help pleeease! I have been having this problem for the last week.

My CD-RW (LG CD-RW CED-8080B) has started to not work.
I am running a compaq Presario 1.2 Gig.128Ram and win xp.

The cdrw was working ok until a week ago.I have taken it out, reinstalled it - all to no joy.

My PC picks it up as a CD-RW, and installs the correct drivers. If there is no CD in the drive it allows me to double click on the CD icon and opens up as if there is a cd in there - but displays nothing.it use to ask me to insert a cd! If I put a CD in the drive it starts to read it, PC runs very slow and programs stop responding. PC usage only 2-4% though.

I hope someone out there has any ideas that can help me please, or require more info before they can!

Sorry if this is a long winded thread - 1st time I have ever been on and posted one!

Thanx.
Garlee.

Is the CDROM connected as cable select? Try switching it to slave, and try switching to a different IDE port.
Make sure the device shows up properly in control panel.
You may also need to run a CD cleaner to realign the laser. If none of these works and you've checked your connectons, the drive might be starting to go.

Thanx for the help. Not sure how to do what you have advised! will look it up on the net unless you can tell me here!
Will let u know how it goes.

Ok, let me be more specific.
Make sure the computer is off and powered down before doing this ;)
On the back of the CDROM, there are pins grouped together. There should be little engraven letters above these sets of pins (CS,SL,MA). Depending on what set of pins the jumper is on, remove it with tweasers or something and place the jumper on the MA or SL pins.
Now, once you have done this, power on the system and see if the CDROM is detected properly in BIOS and then try Windows.
To switch IDE ports, if you follow the ribbon cable off of the back of the CDROM, it will attach to the motherboard on an IDE port. There are usually two of these ports on the motherboard so try disconnecting the ribbon cable and putting it on the other port.
To check the device in control panel in windows, go to Start->settings->control panel. In there there should be a listing for the CDROM device. Make sure the CDROM device or any other devices have no yellow exlamation mark (!) or "x" overtop the device.
Also make sure to firmly wiggle the connections of the CDROM and check to see if there are any bent pins (IDE connection).
Finally, if none of these help, you should purchase a CD cleaning kit from some electronics store and hopefully this will fix everything.
If this does not work, then most likely your CDROM is pooched.

Hope this helps. ~Apex1x

To add, when your in control panel, go to the "system" icon to check your devices :) ~Apex1x

And with winXP, you must go to "hardware" tab and then select the "device manager" ~Apex1x

I have just read thread750-386938.

I also have an LG CD-RW CED-8080B (on a Dell XPS B1000r) which is not running since I upgraded to Windows XP, and does not even show up on my device manager. Where should I start to get it working?

For this cd-rw 8080B, the only driver (for XP) I found is
INSTALL.INF and xp doent't want to install it. Do you know
another driver that I can install?

i have this cdrw in my spare machine and XP doesnt need any other driver, it always just auto installs.

apex1x post is more the source of your problem or ide cables are knackered.

Or the ASPI layer is missing/corrupt.
Get ASPIcheck, and ForceASPI from:
Cheers,
Jim

I never got teh CDRW to work. Went and got a new sony cdrw, installed it and works fine. Installed the old one cd-rw 8080B into a windoiws 98 machine and it works again! I think it is just XP does not like the drive!
