I need an opinion from all of you.

We need to do an upgrade for our BCM from 3.5 to 4.0 but in order to do, according to the tech, we need to do the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7. So we will need to do 2 upgrades.

We have about 25 phones and callpilot mailbox using digital phone. Our system is very basic. We will do the back up one hour before we do the upgrade.

How long does it take to do the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7 and 3.7 to 4.0?

We only have 6 hours to do it, I am not sure if that's possible or to risky to do it. Should I do the second upgrade on a different night?

They got the 3.7 to 4.0 on mid December 07. We have to wait one more month since we found out that we have version 3.5 so they need 3.5 to 3.7 upgrade CD. They had to order it and it takes about 10 days for 3.5 to 3.7 upgrade CD

Well, our upgrade is currently processing for very long time at 77%. It is at the last step (BCM initialization). Have any one of you experiencing this issue? We are not sure what we need to do it has been 4 hours since we start the upgrade

We decide to stop the process. The telephony services is running but we could not get to the BCM GUI.

We connect to the BCM using serial connection and we get inside and the BCM is now version 3.7.

Any one know what is going on?

I would say the BCM got hosed and your SOL, you could try doing the upgrade again, but I don't think it will let you.

You could also try doing the 4.0 upgrade as at this point you don't have anything to lose.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

The upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7 took 4 hours and you stopped it mid-process?

If I were you, I would re-image your HD at 3.7 and repgrogram VM/AA etc. From this point, I would apply the Bios patch (and any patches that it depends on) and then proceed with the 4.0 upgrade.

Else, you could re-image at 3.5, patch back to your starting point, restore your backup (telephony and Voice Apps ONLY) and run the process again.

He can only reimage if he has the images and Bit Tool or Ghost. a backup probally won't help.

Update:

The first part of the upgrade is completed. The GUI showed the process at 77% but it is completed, verified by Nortel 2nd level engineer and it is a known issue (Upgrade stall at 77% BCM initialization). The solution is to clear the Log using cleanevents and replaced the PEC card

Our problem was the certificate and the Apache. The certificate was replaced from another working system and the apache was turn on. Problem is solved.

BUT there is another problem with the drive partition after the first upgrade. One of the drive partition was swapped with another partition. Nortel was aware of the issue but they do not know the cause of the issue nor the solution.

So before we do the upgrade from 3.7 to 4.0, we will replace the HD (3.7) and do the restore and start the second upgrade from here

If it's an oler system (3.5 means at least a couple of years old), that's not altogether a bad plan. Rather than re-image a drive that's got a couple of years wear on it, put in a new one and move forward.

At least you'll be able to do a backup and restore at 3.7. Remember -- ONLY telephony and Voice Apps.

Don't forget to apply the Bios Patch (best to do after the HD replacement) before proceeding to 4.0

These upgrades are big fun, huh? Too bad you didn't start your upgrade before 1/28/08 and you would have avoided the SSL problem..

Do you know what core version you made your backup from? If not when you try to restore to your new 3.7 drive it wont work unless the core versions are the same. There were only about 12 or so cores for 3.7 so if you don't know you will have to patch to each version and then try to restore..

Also, *make sure* you use the latest 4.0 upgrade disks. Otherwise if you have either of two specific core loads you will lose all telephony programming after upgrade completes.
