I need an opinion from all of you.

We need to do an upgrade for our BCM from 3.5 to 4.0 but in order to do, according to the tech, we need to do the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7. So we will need to do 2 upgrades.

We have about 25 phones and callpilot mailbox using digital phone. Our system is very basic. We will do the back up one hour before we do the upgrade.

How long does it take to do the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7 and 3.7 to 4.0?

We only have 6 hours to do it, I am not sure if that's possible or to risky to do it. Should I do the second upgrade on a different night?

From my expierence I would allow 2 hours per upgrade, but there will probably be better advice behind me.

Not including any backups, 3.5 to 3.7 should take about 90 to 120 minutes.

Once you are at 3.7, I would recommend another backup, and the application of the 3.7 BIOS patch.

The upgrade from 3.7 to 4.0 should take about 90 minutes with the system config you detailed above.

Thank you, According to above information, I should have enough time to do 2 upgrades.

You may have to set the Date back to about Jan, 2007 to get the 3.5 to 3.7 to work.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Sorry, thats on the PC not the BCM, so if you get an error set the Date back.

I found i had to load some patches before hand. If all goes well, it could take anywhere from 4-6hrs. Make sure u back it up after each stage. Out of 7 upgrades from 3.5 - 4.0 I had one go bad. Luckily I did a backup at 3.6. I ended up replacing the 3.5 HD w/ a 3.6 and uploaded the 3.6 backup and then proceeded on to 4.0.

I have questions, We will do a full system backup before we start the upgrade.

After we finish the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7 and 3.7 to 4.0, Do we need to reprograme all of the phone, voicemail, features and etc or all of those will be there when we restore the backup in the new version?

Everything should be there if you do the upgrade the right way and there shouldn't be a need to reprogram anything.

PS do not use the backup to do a restore unless you need to put everything back to 3.7 or 3.0. if you try to use the restore on the 4.0 you will screw it up and the system won't work. also you need to get the old Keycodes upgraded to 4.0 and reinstall them after you get to 4.0.

Thanks Acewarlock,

So even we changes the OS at 3.7 to 4.0 upgrades, It will not erase the data so we do not have to reprograme everything.

That should be correct if you do everything right. but thats why we say do backups, just incase it dosn't work and you need to restore back to a 3.0 or 3.0.

Thanks again,

I just want to confirm so the 3.5/3.7 backup is only working on 3.0 version not in the 4.0 which is linux based

Yes, Do not use the 3.5/3.7 backup in the 4.0, it is only to protect you if the upgrade fails to get to 4.0 and you need to go back to 3.5 or 3.7.

DO NOT USE the 3.5/3.7 backup in the 4.0

Make sure you have the latest 3.7 - 4.0 upgrade disk as some of the the early ones from last year had a possibility of erasing the database. Check the Nortel site for the bulletin.

Is there any indication to know of the disc is a new upgrade Disc?

The vendor is going to do the upgrade but I want to monitor it to make sure we have a smooth upgrade.

Should we always need to do the pre-check tool?

How long it takes to run this pre-check tool?

I don't have the part # handy. If your vendor is an authorized Nortel dealer then they should have access to the Nortel Bulletins on the Nortel site. As a customer, I'd raise the issue w/ them and have them verify they have the lastest version. I think they can download it from the Nortel site. They'll still be able to use the same upgrade keycode license that was already purchased.

I believe that the upgrade can also be downloaded from nortel.com
