Dumb question. I upgraded to a magix carrier and system. How do I use the Legend 800 Gs/Gl cards that don't fit in the Magix carrier. Is there an easy answer?

you can't. While some of the new cards for the magix can be fitted with a clamshell to work on the Legend, the cards made for the Legend will not work on the Magix.

Ok, is it possible to connect a legend expansion carrier and insert it there? I knwo the carriers are inexpensive.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get the Magix 800 card?

actually, we have already taken legend cards and removed them from their shells and placed them in the metal carrier. The cards itself will work. The only issue is that the cards do not lock in. We only do this if one of our customers need a card in a pinch and we don't have the right card in stock. When the actual card comes in, then we always pull the other type of card. And according to the Avaya quick refrence yes, you can add a plastic expansion carrier to a magix primary carrier. The issue here is there can be no gap in slots. Slots 1-5 need to be filled in order for the cards in the expansion carrier to work. Hope this helps.

The Avaya Magix 3.0 manual states that the following cards can be used either in plastic carriers (in the Legend), or in the Magix metal control unit:

100 DCD
100 DS1
400 E&M
408 GS/LS-ID-MLX
412 LS-ID-TDL
800 DID
800 LS-ID
800 NI-BRI
008 MLX
008 OPT
016 ETR
016 T/R
016 MLX
024 TDL
MERLIN Messaging System

The following modules cannot be placed into a metal carrier (though are supported by Magix software)
400 GS/LS/TTR
408 GS/LS-MLX
800 LS
800 GS/LS
800 GS/LS-ID
008 OPT with ring generator
012 T/R with ring generator
012 T/R without ring generator
MERLIN LEGEND Mail

The problem here. I think, is one of size and shape, rather than electronics. The cards mentioned are compatible electronics-wise, but won't fit securely. I suppose if cheapology were applied, you could strip off the plastic shell, and zip tie it in place. You know you can engineer almost anything with zip ties and duct tape, at the expense of asthetics, of course.

Several of the older Legend cards actually have two circuit cards inside, tied together with some flex wiring. This would be rough to slip into the metal chassis. I haven't looked recently, but it seems the older two-part circuit boards are bigger top-to-bottom as well, so might not actually even fit in the metal chassis. Anyone have a spare card they feel like opening up just to check? (I don't want to take my system out of service.)

I have a customer with a 3 cabinet Magix. It was a Legend R 5.0 that we upgraded to a Magix 2.0 so he could use an INA card. Now it is 1 Magix main cabinet and two Legend cabinets. Been working well for a year. Had to leave off part of the Magix mounting bracket so the metal and plastic backplanes would mate properly. Also reused 2 800 GS/LS and one 800 DID card removed from their clamshell in the Magix cabinet. All is well. Can't use any ATL cards with Magix and some of the MLX cards had to be upgraded as well. But it has not had any problems because of the missing shells or differing cabinets. Using PRI and has about 40 MLX sets, 90 s/l sets and MLM 007.
Hope this helps.

The Magix/Legend is infamous for doing things that the manual says it won't do or support, but when you stretch the limits you might be asking for trouble. I have even went out to customer sites and found cards missing from the middle of a cabinet and everything to the right of the vacant slot was working just fine. How? Beats me! It's not supposed to work. By keeping within the Avaya specs, you will save some heartache when calling tech support. Then again, tech support doesn't really seem to be supporting us much anymore, so carry on! If the zip ties and duct tape don't work, there is always JB Weld! JB Weld kept my tank running in Desert Storm, so it has earned a permanent place in the tool box:)
