Hi...we are in the process of looking for a new backup software and we are thinking of bringing in LEGATO please share your opinions, concerns, etc.

Legato for Windows v6.2
Pros:
-very powerfull command line operations
-integrates with Legato for Unix and a dozen other o/s's
-very flexable & scaleable
-push is less server intensive
-support for Dynamic Drive Sharing

Cons:
-stream based backups; if your network interrupts the stream Legato can't continue.
-bass ackwards method of setup
-no integral Son/Father/Grandfather scheme
-unix style security + windows security can be a pain
-doesn't failover between multiple jukeboxes nicely
-reporting is terrible (read non-existent)
-very dns dependent (multiple name resolution will make it fail)
-odd scsi block size issues 4 disaster recovery
-scanning a tape for D.R. can take hours and has to be done in the correct tape order (zzzzzzz)

summary: powerfull but not easy to use

Why don't you just contact Legato Sales? You can tell them your backup needs and they will answer your questions and demonstrate the product.

This way, you can decide for yourself whether it suites your needs.

Everyone will have their own opinion, but it may not be the same as if you experienced it for yourself.

You can also download the product, then install manuals, and the administrator guide and try it out for yourself. You can find these at

Networker 7 is way better than any previous released version, all those "cons" go away :)
