i want to do a linux from scratch project. anyone have the name of a good book to learn unix from the ground up?

That question to me sounds like "I'd like to build my own aeroplane. Does anyone have the name of a good book to teach me how to fly?"

Why do you want to do a Linux from scratch project when there are so many flavours (as Dian mentioned) already? I think you should probably start smaller than that, unless you're really determined. :)

There are many books available, specialized to different distributions, that come with media to install the OS.

Try a google search for "que linux books" and you'll find a bunch. Or try a search on Amazon.

Dedicate a machine to your project and load whatever you choose to study. Having "hands-on" time gives you a better understanding of what the book is trying to teach.
