Hi,

I am thinking of learning delphi since it is what I need since I am not looking to be a professional programmer. Programming is just something that challanges me.

I was wondering whether I need to know pascal or object pascal to start learning delphi. Or can I start from scratch.

Also, what is a good compiler to have. And it seems there aren't that many delphi tutorial sites that explain things well. Can any1 suggest a website or a book to buy?

Thanks

Delphi is a complete development tool and includes a compiler, so you don't have to choose one! :)

Knowing Pascal isn't necessary to learn Delphi, it might make things a little easier if you do, but there's no reason why you shouldn't start from scratch - I did and I think Delphi's great!
If you want tutorials or books then the publications by Marco Cantu are always really good, and he runs an excellent web site as well, at:

you can download an introduction to Delphi book from this site (see Essential Delphi in the site menu)

So what would you need if you were looking to be a professional programmer? Maybe the rest of us should look into that.

c/c++

I am sure delphi can do most everything c++ can, but c++ is more robust in my opinion. Why? well because c++ is more wide popular then delphi. WHere I live, almost no one heard of Delphi. Borland should really advertise more of it. Yet I know many good programs like Homepage and 1st page 2000 and not to mention ZoomPlayer are all made in Delphi.

c/c++ ?? Not because something look cryptic, it means that it is good. Everybody has heard of C (and think that it is the only real programming language), but to come back to the essence of your topic
