Hi,

I bought a used laptop that I have to use during day light and nights as well. During day time it is just fine. However, because of its high brightness I am having hard time looking contineously into the monitor during night time.

Could anyone please give me some idea how could i fix the brightness/contrast on my laptop.

It's a Sony Vaio, PCG-GRX670.

There is a 'sun' picture (in blue print, 'Fn' key is also in blue print) on the F5 key. Besides, there are (LCD/VGA) prints on F7 and (LCD/TV) prints (all in blue print) on the F8 key.

I tried Fn + F5, Fn + F7, and Fn + F8. Nothing worked.
Seems to be a very simple problem, but I have been working putting dark-sun-glasses on during nights!

Please help if you happened to know any possible way to fix it.

Thank you in advance,

Steven

Look on t he bottom of the monitor on the laptop as they may be well blended but there should be buttons on it or on the edge of the laptop above the keyboard.

according to the user manual:

To increase brightness press and release the Fn+F5 keys. Press the up arrow key or the right arrow key.

To decrease brightness press and release the Fn+F5 keys. Press the down arrow key or the left arrow key.

You can download a pdf copy of the manual here:

Hi Kevin,

Thanks you so much for the link and for your suggestions also.

However, I am still not being able to do it. I pressed Fn+F5 keys and released... then pressed down arrow (or left arrow). Still it is not working. I am trying to lower the brightness.

Did you see that instruction on the manual? Because I could not find it. On page 49/50 it does talk about the LCD but not the brightness / contrast.

I would highly appreciate your help if you could please tell me where to look for more help.

Thank you.

Hi electronicsfreak,

Thank you so much for your response, but this stupid notebook does not have those buttons you said. I guess I have to keep using sunglasses duing night...hah!

Regards,
Steven

Dear Kevin,

Sorry! I found the instruction on page 28 about the lowering and increasing brightness. I guess, my laptop has some problem that's why it's not working even with right instructions.

I thank you so much for your help though!

Rgds..steven

you're welcome, too bad it's not working though, I feel your (eye) pain! I'm visually impaired myself and being able to adjust brightness/contrast/color is very important.

Hm gotta love it when they dont give you all the options for adjusting things lol. I have had hardware that has had certain options that dont work. Kind of annoying to lol.

These functions are usually controlled by the BIOS. Before declaring a hardware problem, can you find out if there is any way for you to reflash a newer version of the BIOS?

Hi Felix,

I am having difficulties to understant much about BIOS. How would I be finding if there is any option of reflashing a newer version of it?

Sorry I am not very good at hardwares. Thanks for your effort.
