In Act!2005, I have made a layout in the designer. I cannot find start using the layout. I follow the directions about using the Layout button on the bottom left and all I get for choices aret the two basic numerical designs, not the layout I created and saved. How do I start using it? What am I doing wrong. I can find it in the Designer but can't activate it for use.

Thanks for the insight. I kind of gave up on it and have been messing around with a Act 2000 version. It DOES show my layout to choose. I am becoming more familiar with the 'thinking' of the program. I may take you up on your idea to get the Act 2007. It is on sale right now at Office Max for $99. Should I invest? What are your thoughts?

BTW: The layout folder in ACT! 7-9 is under Databases \ [Database Name] files \ Layouts
In ACT! 5/6 they weren't directly connected to a database and all layouts were in the same folder seperate to the databases - defined in Edit Preferences
As to your new question, it depends on your usage, needs and infrastructure.
How many users?
For a single user, you might find 5.0 (I'd prefer 6.0) to be sufficient if the extra functions aren't needed.
What hardware?
If your hardware is reasonably up to date, ACT! 9.0 provides a lot of benefits. I recommend:
Hard drives 7200rpm or faster
1GB on workstations
2GB for server 5-10 users (adjust for different user numbers)
2GB min or dble the RAM (whichever is greater) Swap File
Before you upgrade, check the db with Red Flags to remove corruption that causes issues with conversion -
