Layers won't show - please help!

So I'm just starting a project that I'm guessing now won't be done on time - oh well it was personal anyway. My problem is that when I go to check the layers it will not open. All other tools open just fine except of course the one I really, really need. I tried shutting ai down and reopening- didn't work. Tried opening new document - didn't work. Went to preferences but there is really nothing there for this situation. Can't think of what else to do though I'm sure there is something I'm missing. By the way using AI 10 on XP. Any and all help will be much appreciated!

The most common reason for Adobe apps breaking is corrupted Preferences.

Try quitting AI, trashing prefs and relaunching.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook

is it that the layers palette is not showing? Or is it that there should be multiple layers but is only showing 1?

Thanks a bunch! Yes, I found the preferences and that is exactly what it was. I think I sort of knew that but can never remember where it is. Thanks again!
