Layering problems in Adobe Ilustrator

I have managed to mask part of a picture then place it on a coloured background job done but my problems somes when I re-open the file masking has reverted back to the original pic. All they layers seem to be there but not doing the job!!

...what method of mask are we talking here, transparency mask or clipping mask?
