Layer Options Sometimes Grayed 1

I'm puzzled by the fact that some .pcx scanned images that I import into PhotoShop 6 are fine. But for others the layer options are grayed out. I can't figure out what the difference is between various images that causes some to work and others not.

Any suggestions?

Figured it out. Just a matter of changing the image mode. When all else fails, read the manual!

How did you fix it?

I am having a similar problem with my scanner.

All images that I scan are locked and can note be edited.

HELP!

sometimes in photoshop you can't edit the pics until the scanner dialogue has been shut down, is that it? If not try saving the images and then reopening them. If you mean the background layer, then double click it in the layers palette and hit ok and it will be converted into an editable layer.

Nope... that's not it.

It has not always been like this. It just "magically" started doing this.

The scanner box is completely closed and the image is imported into PhotoShop.

I am unable to edit the image in any way, including adding a layer or opening the existing layer.

Suggestions?

Can you OPEN the pic instead of IMPORTING the pic

go to image menu and then mode - is the image 16-bit?

if it is change it to 8-bit
