layer brightening

hi, been using photoshop for awhile but there are still many things to learn, having a small problem. i cutting and pasting two images into one photo and have everything cut, blended, and in place except the one image is quite a bit brighter than the other. I'm trying to alter the brightness so the two images have the same levels, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Still have the photos on separate layers? Level or curve adjustments will apply to the active layer. Take some samples of desired from one and adjust the second to be in that range.

Given good methods of correction (like dmacster), I would use followings to monitor changes:
1) Look where? I would use "Color Sample tool", to mark the reference points (one on each image) to be observed inside 'Info' palette.
2) Compare what? I would change Image Mode temporarily into "Lab". The "L" (i.e. lumniosity) mostly resemble human feeling as far as I found in PS.

You could also use the Color Burn tool on the "bright" layer. It will darken the photo.

The standard approach is a curves adjustment layer with a mask.
