Large table on page is making things very slow at design time. 1

Hi Guys,

I have a page with a very large table on it, It has roughly 1023 table cells ,,

I need to add 32 recordsets to this page and have completed the first 2 adding all the fields to the page in the correct places.

The problem im having is that its dreadfully slow at design time dreamweaver realy seems to be struggeling with my page, eack click of my mouse is takeing up to 20-30 seconds to comply as are any changes I try to make.

At this rate its going to take about a month to fill all mt tables cells with the recordsets values........its realy painfull.

Can anyone give me some suggestions as to why this is happening.

more to the point. how does it perform on a server?

there is an import function in dreamweaver, u acn add all the content in a text file using , as a seperator. like this:

asd,cd1,cd2
asd1,cd3,cd4

u can now import this text file into dreamweaver, it will automatically create a 2 rows and 3 columns table.

u can also see the help for other formats (like MS exel files)...

Known is handfull, Unknown is worldfull

It actually runs as normal on the server, its just design time im having the issue.

I don't use design view at all so I've no idea what would be "normal" in this case and as it works fine on a server, my feeling would be not to worry about it and do the testing using a server or IIS on localhost (Win 2k or XP Pro)

32 recordsets ...you are opening up 32 recordsets....

Maybe best to write the code in SQL stored procedure and then build a new table...(that would display your data that you require on the page..

The query qry_Gen_FULL is stored in the access database and is set up to pull 6 generations at a time, this was the largest query I could build in access as I tryed to go further Access couldnt cope and said my query was to complex after 6 generation.........

So I have a table on the page, each colum doubles in cells

so the first colum has 1 cell with the main name, the second colum has 2 cells for the names of the parents and so on untill the final colum which has 32 cells holding the GGGparents....

So to extend this from a 6 generation tree to a 10-11 generation I have to requery the database once for each of the names held in colum 6 (32 names) so that I can extend the tree....

So each name in colum 6 (32 names) has been made into a session Var so that once displayed I can take Name1 and query it using a recordset that pulls all the data relating to Name1.....

And move on to Name2 doing the same thing over and over............

This is a huge task or it seems to be and as I say it is working so far but its slow going, Ive only got as far as Name4 in the page but when tested its returning the correct records.........and is not overly slow at displaying at all as yet.

I am opening and closing the recordsets as they are called and finished with.

Where do you close the record set? If you haven't closed it (specifcally)... it is still open.

Also you said you are using Access. Access will choke on multiple connections. You will definitly feel this if you aren't closing any connections. What will happen is that you will just keep opening new connections (and it will begin to run very slowly). Close your connections as soon as you are finished with them.

Also you should look into paginating your results. Only show 20 at a time. This will save you on bandwidth and server resources (ie: it will be faster).
