Large file performance in Lotus 1-2-3

I have a Lotus 1-2-3 file which has grown over time to about 14MB with 105 sheets/tabs. All of a sudden, my system (400 MHz with 160MB) has slowed to an imperceptible crawl, apparently due to the size of this file. (I have tried defragmenting the disk, closing all other apps, rebooting... nothing helps). Is there any remedy for this? Failing a way to improve performance, I would split the file into two pieces; so is there a way to move sheets between files?

Hi msorens,

Can you first confirm that you don't have "Recalculation mode" still set to "Automatic" ???

A new file defaults to "Automatic" recalculation, but over time if there are more and more formulas added, this can cause a degradation in speed, even with a FAST PC.

With Release 5 (the version I prefer because it's STILL the BEST), the method of setting the file to "manual" recalculation is...

Tools - User Setup - Recalculation - Manual.

After setting Recalculation to "Manual", all one has to do to update all the formulas, is to hit the "Calc" key - <F9>.

I hope this helps. :) Please advise. If not, then the next step will likely be splitting up the file as you suggested.

I am certain that I was in manual recalc mode while investigating this problem. I do, however, have some additional information about the problem:

The day after I submitted my problem statement, I again tried opening the same 14MB file -- and it worked fine, with normal (very quick) response time, even with Auto-Recalc!!

So to restate the problem: *sometimes* when I open this Lotus 1-2-3 file, it will max out the CPU (System Monitor shows CPU utilization shoots up to 100% for minutes at a time). If I close the file, then CPU utilization drops to normal, and all other applications work with quick responses. I'm not sure how to isolate this further; I detest intermittent problems... Any ideas??

Hi again,

...some thoughts "off the top of my head"...

1) Adding more memory might be worth considering - it's "real cheap", especially compared to years ago.

2) I only have Windows 98 (perhaps later versions are improved) - but I STILL DO have memory problems - from time-to-time - specifically when I've been doing various "heavy-duty" work with different software. At some point, when things get "sluggish", I'll terminate those programs I no longer require. In spite of this, I'm STILL NOT able to "recover" the full memory of my PC. My ONLY option is to re-boot if I want to load a large file, for example an Excel file.

I also question whether the system resources indicator is really "accurate". Perhaps Microsoft's "logic" is that the indicator IS correct - in advising of what the system resources "should be". However, "internally", it might well be a "different" story.

I thought Microsoft advertised that this sort of problem would be eliminated with versions BEYOND Windows 95 (or possibly even WITH Windows 95).

Perhaps others out there can comment on this memory recovery issue, related to later versions of Windows ???

I hope this helps a bit. Best of Luck :)
