have a new laptop, Windows XP Pro. When I attempt to join my domain I get the following:

The following error occured attempting to join the domain "mydomain".
The Dirrectory Services was unable to allocate a relative identifier.

I verified that I did have network connection and was able to ping DNS servers.

Check in services to see if Workstation and Server is started.

Windows XP Pro SP2 Firewall Blocks trafic by default sometimes depends on suppiler i found, don't know why but turning off the firewall lets me join the domain and then turn it on afterwards sometimes works.

Regards,
Darren.

Thank you all for the replies.

I will check the services to see if they are on.
I have the firewall off.

All the other workstations were already exisiting on the network. These are two new laptops that arrived last week. The other computers are functioning fine.

I have verified that Licenses are not an issues either.
There appears no error messages in the event logs on the laptops.

Anything else?

Do you happen to have vpn software installed on these? Our corporate office istalls MUVPN for access throught a couple of Watchguard firebox at different sites. I have found that when that service is running from within my organization, I am not able to join anything even thought the laptop recognizes my DHCP server and is assigned a good IP and DNS. Took me a while to figure that one out.

Thanks, Maugwa, but no I do not have these running. These are new, out of the box laptops.

When you say you can ping the DNS servers, is that by name or IP Address? Sounds like it could still be a DNS issue. How do the laptops get their IP Address. DHCP? Check to make sure that the primary DNS on the workstations is the DNS server for the domain. Anything in the Event Viewer on the DC?
