hello,
i have an acer aspire 4730z and when ever i try to turn it on... i hear it physically start up and the lcd screen turn on... but its black.
i even went as far as plugging my desktop computers screen into monitor port on the side... when i turned it off and back on, it does the same thing just a black screeen.
it'll just sit there an not take me to the vista log on screen... any suggestions?

Is there a flashing cursor in the upper left hand side of the screen or just NOTHING at all??

Can you see the prompts during POST to "press F2 to enter BIOS"????

If so, you could create the Ultimate Boot CD and boot from that and run some diagnostic tests.

I'm thinking video card if there is absolutely NOTHING that comes on the screen from the moment you press the power button.

have u tried toggeling between the screens (fn+f5 key)
your backlight might be gone

Ummm..... He said in his post that he plugged it into his external monitor.

the screen is blank when i turn it on... it doesnt give me opportunity to press F2 or F8 or anything.... and ive tried that... wondering if it was in like... presentaion mode or somethin... ive never took apart a laptop b4... so... you thin if i just unplug the ram an hard drive restart the computer... maybe it'll fix itself.... my girl friend said she installed the windows updates and it said restarting but it took forever so she just turned if off with the power button... an thats when the screen never turned on again

I don't think that removing the RAM and/or the hard drive will fix it, but you can sure try it as a "feel good" measure. Pull the battery first. Those items should be real easy to remove.

I don't think it has anything to do with your girlfriend turning it off or with Windows updates because it's NOT windows corruption IF you don't get any "press F2 to enter BIOS" messages as it's starting. That happens BEFORE anything to do with loading Windows.

Sound like video card or motherboard death.

i would pull the battery - my acer aspire does that sometimes - (note: i will never buy an acer product again)

i tried to speak with customer service - but after 1 year, they charge 2$/min just to SPEAK with a technician

So I tried the battery pull - and it started working again.

After research, I learned that these acer laptops have a tendency to fry motherboards - due to overheating.

Wack.

Good Luck

When plugging your laptop into an external monitor try holding down the FN(function key) and hitting one of keys to toggle to external monitor.
Also when you turn on your laptop if you hold it at an angle you should see some type of image. If so that means your backlight blow out. If you don't see anything could be that your lcd screen crap out or ribbon got disconnected somehow.

I highly doubt shutting off your computer during Window Update would make your screen go black.

See if you can see an image when you hold it up at an angle..

Unplug the AC adapter from the laptop. Then pull the battery out. Hold the power button down for about 30 seconds. Then press the power button again a few times just for a second each.

Put the battery back in and the AC adapter back as well.

If it doesn't do anything different, it's your motherboard or your video card.

If it was just the LCD, it would output to his external monitor, but that has already been tried.

nothing... it turns on an the backlight comes on but its still black... just lit up from the back light...

can you get it to display on external monitor?

^^^^ I love these people that don't read the whole thread. That's twice in this thread that people have suggested trying an external monitor when the OP mentions that he tried that straight off.

READ THE THREADS BEFORE RESPONDING PEOPLE!!!!

well.... im not to worried about it now... it was my girlfriends computer... and i just broke up with her lol... so... thanks for your guy's effort ... much appreciated

Way to go dude - we're toiling to fix your problem and you dumped your girlfriend to fix the problem.

That's NOT what I call dedicated troubleshooting at all. You took the easy way out by dumping her.

Maybe she dumped you!!?? (tongue in cheek her boys).

Try removing the RAM one stick at a time and see if it boots. I've had bad RAM chips show up in this same way. If it boots with one chip in and doesn't with the other, then you've found the bad one. Also, you may need to vary slots as the slot can go bad just as well as the chip that's in it. And......regardless of the situation with your girlfriend, be a gentleman and fix it!
